Today there was fierce competition in 5McA as round 2 of the Balloon Car Racer Competition took place! Fridays's champion, Joris, was under pressure as Mustafa's balloon car racer chased his car across the covered court and ended up about half a meter ahead of Joris' at an amazing 20m from the starting line!! Congratulations to both Joris and our new champion, Mustafa! The challenge is still on ... can your car beat 20m???
Read this interesting short story from Matthew. He has done a lot of things really well. Write a comment to tell him what you like about his writing. It all started one bitter, cold, grey day in mid November. I was going to pick up some parcels when I came across an old scrappy alley with broken, glass wine bottles with dark red wine still dripping from the broken glass.
I started to stare at something shiny and gold. I went closer for a better look. It was a shiny doorknob on a bright blue door and on the doorstep was a maroon red package with an emerald green ribbon. I picked it up and knocked on the door. No one replied so I opened the door to see if it was locked. The door was not locked. In fact, when I opened it, it swung straight open and inside there was a dark room with cobwebs and dust on everything. I stepped inside and the door swung shut. I turned around to try and open it but somehow it was locked. I turned around to look for another way out and I saw a broken door on one hinge. I walked to the door and I opened it. Inside there was a big rectangle object hiding under a pale white bed sheet. I flung the bed sheet off and there was a huge wardrobe with beautiful patterns on it. The patterns looked like a forest and up in the corner there was a hill with a lion standing on it. I opened the wardrobe and stepped inside and the next thing I knew I was standing right where I was before, in the scrappy old alley with all my parcels in my arms. Was it all a dream? When I looked for the door it was gone so I walked home puzzled and confused. Please remember to complete the fraction, decimal and percentage worksheet! Remember how delicious those hundredths were? Everyone got 5% or 0.05 or 5/100 or 1/20!!
Here are some problems for you to answer : 1. Ms Sarah only got 1% ... how many hundredths did she eat? 2. Ms Rehanna ate 1/50 ... what % did she eat? What decimal fraction did she eat? 3. Look at the photograph below. Does it show what Ms Sarah ate or what Ms Rehana ate? How do you know? Most of this you should have done but just in case!! This is all due on Monday!
* Maths mates term 3 sheet 2. We will mark it on Monday! * Balloon Car racers to be brought in for the class race! Please test and tweak at home and complete the write up including the tests! *Boomerang aeroplanes to be brought in. Class test! *Complete egg drop write up!! Good luck and have fun!! Today was very exciting! Everyone came with a homemade contraption to protect their egg! Just how well did yours do? Would you make any changes for a future experiment? What tips and ideas did you get form your classmates? What do you think works best ... a parachute? ... insulation? ... a large container? ... a small container?? ... both?? Joris' design was simple. It went in a straight line and traveled quite a distance! Ask him for tips ... he can help you! We found out it was not so easy to make the car move! A great deal of tweaking was required! This is all part of the design cycle and you have to be prepared to spend time making adjustments! I heard lots of great advice today : " The body is too close to the ground, you need to adjust the axles." " The axles should be under the car body , not on top." "The balloon is too heavy and causes drag...try a smaller balloon." " The balloon is in the wrong position ... it is too near the end of the car." " The wheels need to be on the ground" At home you need to tweak your car and test it and tweak it until you are satisfied with it! Good luck! You can do it! Here is a super fraction pattern made from pattern blocks, by Bianca. Can you work out the total? Remember to add up all the pieces ... even the un-named ones!
What is the total? Is it a fraction? A mixed number? A whole number? A decimal? This Thursday you can have a SUBWAY sandwich for lunch! Look at the order form below and decide what you would like. If you have the form complete and bring to me on Wednesday ... tomorrow! If you didn't get the form think about what you would like and complete the form tomorrow morning! Please remember to bring the cash tomorrow morning! You need to pay tomorrow so you can eat on Thursday!
* Boomerang Aeroplane ... due Wednesday! The Boomerang Aeroplane Championship will take place lesson 4! * Egg Drop Challenge ... due Friday. Please look at the information sheet and science write up on your google docs. The Egg Drop will take place on Friday!! * Balloon Car Racer.
